How many carbs in taco seasoning?
Store bought taco seasoning packet mixes can had sneaky sugar, additives and fillers in them. Many packet mixes also have a high sodium content.
The nutritional information on the back of the packet might suggest that the contents are low carb but look carefully at the serving size as many will show the serving size as just 2 teaspoons. 2 teaspoons is not going to take you to flavour town and can add up to high carbohydrates.
Making your seasoning mix at home gives you control over the carbs of the spices used. By using low carb spices and herbs you can make a keto taco seasoning mix for many vegetarian recipes.
Ingredients
There are many taco mixture recipes with a variety of spices. This is based on an authentic Mexican mix, but you can play around with the ingredients to your own taste.
The difference to our mixture compared to many is the use of lemon pepper. It adds a little heat with a touch of zest flavor.
This keto-friendly taco seasoning has a medium heat so if you like your spice, feel free to add chili or hotter spices.
Variations
We used regular paprika but this can be substituted with smoked paprika for a deeper flavour.
The red chili pepper flakes can be substituted with cayenne pepper, chili powder or chipolte pepper.
If you like your taco seasoning saltier, increase the salt to taste.
How to make keto taco seasoning
This is a quick and easy recipe but before you add all the ingredients in a jar we place the dried oregano and parsley in a mortar bowl and mix them with a heavy pestle. This helps release the flavor of the herbs.
After this, add all ingredients into a jar and shake vigorously until combined.
Storage
Keep the homemade keto taco seasoning mix in a glass mason jar and away from direct sunlight. The sunlight can fade the spices and affect the flavours.
The spice mixture will last up to 3 months in a sealed container.
